My experience with "Are you Y2K ready."

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I had a small side consulting business which provided services to many insurance companies. I expected many of them to query me as to my Y2K remediation status in the past. This was expected because insurance companies use many outside vendors such as myself. I waited, and waited and waited and nothing happened last year. I finally received my first query a few months ago in written format which asked me to check off the yes or no box. Last week I finally received a phone call from a second company and they said "We are checking our vendors. Are you Y2K ready?" No preamble, just the question. I thought this might be a serious inquiry. "You bet" I replied and waited for the rest of the query about who, what, why, where, ect and 3rd party proof of verification. "OK" she said. "Have a nice day." No wonder there is such unreliability in remediation estimates.

i just temped at a place that does detail cleaning (got out of the car business). they have had 2 (count 'em, 2) of their clients ask about their status. their reply letters said that they had replaced all their old systems; however, they were already using Mac's. what i found curious is that i noticed they had at least 100 clients, all in the DC Metro area. i'm assuming nobody's worried about them because they just do cleaning and repair (carpet repair, marble, not housekeeping). maybe they're considered an expendable vendor.

What else are people going to say when ask? No we are not compliant.

Let see--what are the trade offs? If I tell the person asking "no we are not compliant" I lose their business. If I just say "of course" what recourse do they have. It is an absurd.

Customer to Busy Mechanic-- "you checked all my cars fluid levels right" Absolutely!!!!
