Movie Analogies

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

There was an interesting post a week or so ago about movies analogous to Y2K. I've been thinking about it and thought I'd add my opinion.

The movies that come to mind are Terminator I and II. "The War Against the Machines" caused by our own arrogance and lack of foresight. Brilliant minds creating machines to do everything for us, becoming dependent upon them and not foreseeing disastrous consequences. Also, the character of Sarah Connor, an innocent happy-go-lucky person having to learn how to become a survivor. I think if Y2k is an 8 or greater, we all better have a little "sarah" in us. OK, maybe it's a stretch, hopefully this all won't end in nuclear war, but I think the ideas are the same. Dependence upon computers and the need for the development of survival/self-sufficiency skills, changing the way we look at the world.

Someone months ago here said it best. We here are already developing the will to survive, a lot of it is attitude. Those who won't face the possibilities now are going to have a hard time dealing with even the minor inconveniences when the time comes. I think the mental preparedness may even be as important as the physical preps we're doing.

Dakota:

Your thoughts are well taken and insightful.

Mental preps are all important. The physical ones are also, but won't help a whole lot if we are not mentally prepared.

Armies train troops for this. Should we do any less?

Rent these movies in this order:

1. Trigger Effect 2. The Postman -- starring Kevin Costener (sp)-Not the Italian movie. After you view these two you will probably want to get armed if you are not already. 3. A Bugs Life - a little levity doesn't hurt during these tense times. But it portrays the ants and grasshoppers.
