two classes of doomers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I have been lurking around here for a while and thanks to you all for the enlightenment (trolls excluded, some of you should be spanked and sent to your rooms).

Whether Y2K is the cause, or if it's the bubble market, weak global economies, something bad this way may come. The 1930's didn't have computers to screw everything up, and every other serious recession and depression probably had a different trigger. What makes so wise to think that nothing like this will ever happen again to us?

(Adjusts tin-foil sombrero, gives more coverage) The sun could cause problems again (as it did to Quebec), or the west coast could get that long predicted "big one". The east could get another hurricane Andrew, or more twisters could affect those in that part of the world. An ice storm or that 100 year blizzard can affect those in the snowy part of the country. The ones the neighbors will run to are the doomers (and the Mormans) that are prepared. It will be nice to be near one of these nutcases (no offense to the Mormans, have Morman in- laws) if that happens. I don't lay awake at night worrying about that stuff, but you have to be in la-la land if you don't think some of these are remotely possible.

IMHO it won't be the doomers that cause panic and bank runs, but the DGI's and DWTGI's that will see things unfolding and go "oh s**t" as they run to the atms and buy up the food at the stores. The doomers will already be prepared and sit back and say "I told you so." The doomers will be the scapegoats, but there will be two classes of doomer, GIALTO (got it a long time ago) and JGI (just got it). The JGI's will be the ones to worry about, because they haven't gone through the anger part of this yet. When they stop spinning, they'll be plenty angry. Watch out when they do. Those will be the ones I'm afraid of.

Bill, I couldn't agree more!

Bill,

I also agree with you that the worst reactions will come from those who get it "late" and don't have time to work through all the anger. Anyone who is basically still in denial at this late date has a long way to go to get their "attitude" stabilized, as most of us here know quite well.

an orbiting mind control lazer caused bill of the tinfoil sombrero to say:

"The doomers will already be prepared and sit back and say "I told you so.""

We hope bill enjoys crow w/beancurd sauce

Birdbrain Borg:

So what facts are you relying on to form your opinion? Do you have anything intelligent to contribute to this thread? Pray tell me about the 'facts' that Y2K won't be a problem. I hope you're right. But your contemptuous cynicism can't hide the fact that you presented NOTHING to debunk anything on this thread. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. And you're living proof of it.

Laughing:

What's to debunk? Bill thinks things will go south so rapidly that those who didn't expect it won't be able to react sufficiently. And Michael and Gordon agree, while Borg disagrees. OK, so far the guesses about the future are running 3:1 in favor of Big Trouble, without a speck of documentation for these guesses provided by anyone. But characteristically enough, the three who guess calamity are not challenged, while the one who guesses otherwise is attacked for "lack of documentation" or some such. Typical double standard.

Flint:

Point taken. But having seen numbers of personal attacks from pollys who mock but offer no proof kinda makes one negative toward the pollys. I hope things don't go south, quite frankly. If the pollys think that anyone who puts extra food aside just in case is a doomer, then I guess I'm a doomer. Otherwise, I don't think it will be the end or the world.

But don't give me that double standard bullcrap. BirdbrainBorg wants to mock, then he/she/it is fair game. So are any doomers that display similar attitudes.

I read this board to try and learn something so that I can adjust my position and preparations accordingly. I think most people do the same. It is very obvious that others just come to make fun of others because they can act out while hiding behind their screens.

At least I can laugh at myself today (tinfoil sombrero) and if y2k is a non-event, I will laugh even louder. If it goes the other way, I won't laugh at the pollies, but will pray for you all. You will need it.

Nobody knows exactly what will happen, and sadly, if the truth did come out, still nobody would believe and change their positions anyway. If it is a serious problem, the sheeple will be looking for heads, if it is a bump in the road, the doomers will be upset because TPTB made it photo finish and caused us a lot of concern.

Personally, I would love to be wrong, and the homeless will get a large donation of food. If I am right, some of my DGI friends and neighbors won't go without. Tell me, who will be the loser?
