To that great sociologist, Shadow

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

As one as versed in sociology as you claim to be, I'm surprised that you seem to be unaware of the stupidity of stereotyping.

I myself learned this lesson at around age 19. Growing up in a mainstream Protestant culture in the Midwest, I had my own dumb ideas to outgrow. When I went off to college, I thought Catholics were nice folk but blindly obedient, and as for Jews, nothing against them except they were knee-jerk liberals, which didn't turn me on. I soon outgrew these notions when I actually met and talked with such non-Protestants.

Now about this forum, you characterize us all as being the same kind of person. Other than being concerned with Y2K in our many separate ways, you cannot make a statement that applies to all of us. Anyone who reads the contributions to this forum and can understand printed English ought to be able to see this immediately.

And I thought that you were different. But no, you are just like all the rest. Sigh.

Peter,

Your words--

Now about this forum, you characterize us all as being the same kind of person. Other than being concerned with Y2K in our many separate ways, you cannot make a statement that applies to all of us. It's kind of obvious that the comments that Shadow was making had to do with the DARKER SIDE OF THIS FORUM! GI

What do you think Ed? Was Shadow refering to the DARKER SIDE OF THIS FORUM?

-- (you@haveno.control), August 14, 1999.

To i: If Shadow and his ilk are talking about a fraction of this forum, I suggest they say so. That's what language is for. Instead we get all-encompassing statements with phrases like "Y2K cult mentality thar reigns supreme here."

-- Peter Errington (petere@ricochet.net), August 14, 1999.

Peter,

This mentality will be the end of this forum:

Me thinks that Shadow doth PROTEST too much...

"Instead we get all-encompassing statements with phrases like "Y2K cult mentality thar reigns supreme here." "

Peter,

Andy, INVAR and Nikolai are only 3 people out of maybe a hundred posting here. They do seem to reign supreme only because they're so loud and prolific with their posts. If you just skipped those three's posts, you'd find the "y2k cult mentality" has just about disapeared. That should be self-evident to even this Shadow guy.

Chris,

Most people in the know understand these little petty nusances. But to the untrained eye of the newbie lurker you get this..

Invar

Chris: You allowed for those posting regularly. How about those of us who do not post very often if at all? Has anyone came up with a figure for those simply reading the posts and not contributing? I always thought there were several hundred or so that come to this site for info but do not post.

Neil, I'll wager it's more like thousands. It still amazes me to meet someone who has been reading this board for a year or more and never so much as once has posted. (Maybe better than I they recognize the value of saying nothing, every chance they get.)

If a lurker falls off his chair but doesn't tell us by posting it, does he exist? ;-)

Hi Niel, Roger, and all lurkers out there!
