What Are Your Plans for Dec. 31, 1999 11:59 p.m.?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Just curious about what some of your plans are for the roll over? I don't plan to get drunk or party hardy. Just me and my honey dancing beneath the clouds, with a holster and gun around our hips.

Same thing I've done for the last 10 years at that time of night - new years eve or not: In bed, fast asleep, and snoring my head off.

Gettin' old, I guess...

Sitting in my rocker with a very smug look on my face? Possibly.

Deep in prayer & meditation. Possibly.

Which will it be? I'll just have to wait & see.

Cutting over a major Airline realtime system. Watching the Operating System, the cpu monitors etc, liasing with Network Control - expecting network problems due to incoming spikes of data, and or failures by third party vendors i.e. MCI, AT & T, satellite links, you name it...

Getting drunk at 8am :)

Talking with people around the world via ham radio, to see what's going on. Actually, I'll start this early on the 31st, because the rollover occurs in Australia before it does here.

Monitoring developments and doing traceroutes to Australian Universities to hopefully, get advance warning.

Too soon to tell.

Me and the Mrs. were actually talking about this very subject tonight.

Me, the party hound, said lets go out and have some fun.

She, practical and less inclined to be caught with a lampshade on her head, said no.

We shall see.

I have never felt the need to party just because it was a New Year. When I was younger, New Years Eve was the best night to make a bundle babysitting! I don't babysit any longer but I will be home with the ones I love dearly watching the tv for news of the rollover.

I'm hoping that the yacht club will have a party...

If not, to bed early...to face another new years day. Plan on doing some snorkeling that day, or maybe play golf...to late to do much else.

Earlier (for the previous 22 hours or so), I plan to monitor the world scene via TV, ham radio, and the internet...

I'll be at work monitoring our client-server systems so that you people will (hopefully) get your checks on time ^_^

-- Jenny (jgig@aol.com), August 12, 1999.

Mad Monk...I wish I were in Hawaii!!!

I'm trying to get my entire family up to a mountain cabin or camp ground. I've never been a drinker and I like to have fun with these people. I also want to make sure they're around for a long time.

If we have to stay a little longer than expected that'll be just fine with me.

In the wilds of rural Geauga County, partying in a low key mode with friends of about 15 years.

I should be asleep in bed, but 7:00 am on 1/1/00 I'll be at work at he power station, and by the time rollover in USA occurs I'll be online and able to tell you all just how we have faired.

I'll be partying and laughing at the image of the tinfoils sitting in their bunkers, looking forward to an end of the world that will not come...

Maybe 20% chance I'll be watching TV or listening to short wave/ham radio. Most likely sound asleep. Don't expect any big deal that night.

Besides, if the power goes out, who cares? Wood stove will be lit anyway and the cook stove will be hot for breakfast 1/2 hour after I shove it full of wood.

Refilling my drink.

I'll probably be toasting the next 1000 years with my fiancee and a few pals with a nice little beer buzz. I will be secretly celebrating that we had not been accidentlally nuked or attacked with bioweapons. But I will not be pie-eyed, shlitz-faced, out-the-window, three-sails-to-the- wind drunk. I'll be keeping a close eye on the radio/TV, and we will be less than two miles from home, if not AT home.

During the day I will be somewhat frightened of Russian or Chinese missle attacks provoked by their DEW systems and power grids failing. Thus I will be on a nice little "drive in the country," outside of town. I don't know if my city will be a target, but it's a major university town with light industry, government services, and about 50- 70,000 people. My fiancee thinks I'm nuts, but with coaxing I think she'll go along with it if I'm really nice and bring along some wine and cheese for a picnic. She doesn't have to see the KI tablets.

Of course, if gasoline is rationed by this time I don't think this is a real option. But really, who the heck knows? Might as well just play it by ear.

This question brings to mind about a party, held down in Florida I believe. A group of freinds rented out a large section of a 3 story brick motel to have a Horicane party. It wasent to be all that strong so lets go, get drunk and party down. The following day a Helicopter flew over the former sight. Not a brick standing. The sole lady survivor was picked up more then a mile away...I wonder if the others wearnt so drunk would they have made it.

I wish I could find a lighted golf course and play a quick 18!

Start a new century with a new handicap.

Asleep in bed, unless the wood furnace needs more wood at that time. Told my teenage daughters to wake me if anything happens.

Actually, I think theres a good chnce we'll ALL feel differently come 12/31/99 --- unless theres absolutely no panic by then, I think there will be.

We will be hosting a quiet little dinner party with our group of GI friends. We will be serving shrimp, crab, lobster, and prime rib. The only alcohol consumed will be a bottle of champagne per couple.

We will be sober, and coherent for the rollover...

sniffin' at the door...

Maybe i will take a midnight snowmobile ride with a few neighbors, especially if it's real cold. The engine runs better, with crisper throttle response, when the temp dips below "0". Won't stray too far from home though, just in case.

Will be monitoring CNN and shortwave since ~7 AM on the 31st (when it hits New Zealand). By 11:59 PM our time, we'll have a really good picture of what the entire rest of the world has faced (all that'll be left is us - basically).

What we've seen will determine the "intensity" of the evenings "program"...

Good luck to us all!

If I'm not screaming in my coffin, I'll probably be doing something abnormal.

-- Randolph (dinosaur@williams-net.com), August 12, 1999.

snoozing as usual- it's always well sub-zero in these parts on New Years eve- snuggled under multiple comforters with the wood stoves going- then up and at em early- goats to milk, etc- will jump on the net though to see what's up!
