Lebanon shaken by earthquakes

Wednesday, 11 August 1999 11:03 (GMT)

(UPI Spotlight) Lebanon shaken by earthquakes BEIRUT, Lebanon, Aug. 11 (UPI) - Lebanon has been shaken by two earthquakes, causing panic and fears that such tremors are linked to the total solar eclipse. A statement by the National Scientific Research Council said (Wednesday) its Behannis center monitored a first earthquake, registering 5.1 on the Richter scale, at 7:28 a.m. (Wednesday). It was located about 268 miles (430 km) from the Behannis Center in the Lebanese mountains and in the direction of Cyprus. It was followed by another tremor, registering 4 on the Richter scale, at 7:40 a.m. located at 131 miles (210 km) in the same direction.

Quakes rocks Mediterranean island of Cyprus, Iran 6.31 a.m. ET (1032 GMT) August 11, 1999

By Alex Efty, Associated Press

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) - A series of earthquakes and aftershocks today jolted large parts of the Mideast and western Mediterranean islands, killing at least one person and injuring 16 people.

A woman was killed and another person injured in Iran, where the Islamic Republic News Agency reported the quake struck the northeastern village of Moaminabad at 12:03 a.m. IRNA said preliminary estimates put the magnitude at 5.1.

On the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, quakes with preliminary magnitudes of 4.2 and 5.8 were reported by the Cyprus Seismological Center. The initial quake struck at 4:20 a.m. today and the second hit about three hours later and could be felt in Lebanon, Syria and Egypt.

The quakes were followed by a series of aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 4.4, according to the center. They hit just hours before the last total solar eclipse of the millennium.

"Is this going to be the end of the world?'' said Andreas Christou, who fled his house in Limassol, near the epicenter of Akrounda. "We hear so much about the eclipse, and now this.''

Police in Cyprus said 15 people suffered minor injuries in the second quake, including two men who jumped in panic from the balconies of their apartment buildings in the southern Cyprus port of Limassol.

They said 82 buildings were slightly damaged on the island, 32 of them in Limassol. The shaking also caused minor landslides on rural mountain roads.

In the western town of Paphos, panicky residents fled their homes and ran into the streets. People on the top floor of apartment blocks in Nicosia, the capital, felt the whole building sway.

Cyprus has frequently suffered earthquakes, which have caused serious damage and dozens of casualties in previous years.

Moderate earthquake jolts Tokyo area 6.07 a.m. ET (1009 GMT) August 11, 1999

TOKYO (AP) - A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.2 shook Tokyo and the port city of Yokohama today, but police said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The tremor was strong enough to rattle windows and doors and sway tall buildings in Tokyo.

The Central Meteorological agency said the epicenter of the quake, which struck at 6:28 p.m. (5:28 a.m. EDT), was about 36 miles under Tokyo Bay.

Yokohama is 20 miles south of Tokyo

Interesting bit of synchronicity? Thanks for the post, Roland!

Sssshhhh. Of course not! Merely "coincidence." Geologists will *never* admit earthquakes are connected to other influences or even each other. Watch news reports: earthquakes are always followed by "disclaimers." INTERCONNECTED seems to be a word that spooks the worldly powers that be, no matter the field.

But Roland, of course we know better ;^) We've been watching this morning on IRIS Current Seismic Events Listing to see how many, where, and when these quakes show up.

They're not all listed yet ...

A & L,

That is a cute pix of Wilbur. Cute acronym too!

From the looks of that IRIS site, it looks like there is a continuous rash of small quakes going on regularly.

Thanks for that link!

You are all very welcome. Somewhere deep in the bowels of the archives is a thread about the Ring Of Fire which lists many great Links. Thanks to all the posters then that hunted & pecked. Getting more RAM soon :-)

Aw, come on guys!! This is exactly the type of completely illogical ill thought out thinking that brings serious Y2k discussion into disrepute.........

There are, on the average, dozens of earthquakes weekly in the world, mostly small but occasionally very large. 3 in one day is not even a statistical anomaly! Furthermore, even if there were a disproportionate amount it would not show any correlation between the events.

Come on now, at least do a little bit of research before trying to make a connection between solar eclipses and earthquakes notwithstanding the fact that NEITHER are in any way connected to Y2k!

Hey Craig,

Just so you know, OT means "OFF TOPIC". Skip it if you want. Leave us to our ravings.

A total eclipse would seem to have effects beyond the simple blockage of visible light. Foucault's pendulums display aberrations in arc during eclipses, an effect documented in the fifties. NASA was planning further experiments today into this unpredicted effect. Possibly something to do with changes in electromagnetic interactions between the sun and earth. Perhaps the counter-rotational velocity of the earth's molten core is effected during an eclipse. That would easily explain earthquakes. No Spam, you available for comments?

Craig, chill : )

We have dozens of minor earthquakes in Los Angeles County in a week let alone the world. I'm not going to say that these quakes were due directly to the Solar Eclipse but it is interesting that they were ALL in countries within the path of the eclipse and anything over a 3.5 to 4 would be considered a quake of magnitude.

So, here's the thing...read the articles again.

People in the path of the Eclipse were/are very, very distressed about it. They were worried even before the eclipse happened. There are stories of people preparing for the apocalypse, violence, etc. There are people who say the Eclipse is nothing more than a natural occurance. When the earthquakes happen, it doesn't matter who's right or who's wrong about the specifics. No matter what modern science might do to discount the possibility that the Eclipse caused the earthquakes, it doesn't matter. Perception IS reality. Panic occurs.

Now, how will the governments react in those areas if they feel the apocalypse has begun? What if they believe that the end of the world is truly at hand? There are already tensions in these areas that are very high. Is war ever really started based on rational thinking?

Personally, I don't find a whole lot of comfort in having natural occurances happening at the same time a solar eclipse occurs which in various prophecies states that it will bring about great changes and war. Do some research, it's facinating and it's interesting how the coincidences of prophecy seem to fit.

I'm keeping an open mind, and an open eye on the road...just in case it's time to bug out :)

There was a little 3.5 jolt right next door to us, the epicenter was in San Juan Capistrano, SoCal. While i know there are fault lines running all over orange county, this is the first time i remember a quake centered in my backyard. Witch means nothing, just throwin in my 2 cents.

Micahael & jenks,

Isn't it gnarly surfing on that old Pacific Plate! From LA to SF we're moving north compared to the rest of the country at the rate your fingernail grows all the time.

Eclipse related to earthquakes? Oh yea...because a moonshadow has the power to cause fault lines to shift. Hurry, get in the doorway. Or is it the bathtub?

You guys crack me up.

-- Jack Binns (shadow@gonna.gitcha), August 11, 1999.

flora, yep, I may be moving north faster than I had anticipated : ) Anyway, even though this is off topic... An increase in earthquakes around the time of an eclipse is nothing new. That may be why it is they become part of many prophecies. Considering that there are many ways we are connected to the stars in the form of unseen energy then why could an eclipse not heighten plate activity? After all, the moon effects our tides, the sun affects our temperatures, etc. We aren't disconnected from it just because it may seem a strange possibility. By the way, there was a very interesting, very, very rare F-2 tornado that hit downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Prior to this the average was about 2 tornados a year in the state that usually hit unpopulated areas and are F-0 in magnitude. The storm from a freak system that is now threatening other areas. Take it for what it's worth. Mike ====================================================================

Mike,

Sorry for the creative name spelling above, I'm trying to give Mr. Cook a run for his money!

Have you seen the satellite images from JPL of the cold mass in the Pacific? It's unseasonably warm & muggy up North. OT - I saw a blue whale spout yesterday.
