Y2K Fatigue? Forum Addiction? All of the Above?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I'm off on vacation and hope to stay off the forum for a little longer than that. I've been Y2K aware since July '97 and a full-blown (panicky) GI since July '98. It's fascinating...too fascinating. I've enjoyed the posts -- they've helped me prep. I've learned about the world in a way that I never could have in any other context. However, it's now time to pull away or go nuts. The many who have been posting for a long time will understand. I'll be back and be asking for some help getting back to speed. Best regards even to the civil (professional?) pollys. Thanks y'all.

Understood, think about baseball, gourmet cooking, detective novels, anything but Y2K for a while. Good luck staying away from the forum, I don't seem to be able to. Enjoy and best wishes...

Y2K doesn't leave your thoughts just because you leave the forum. At least that was my experience. I did learn to let it sink into the background, and to use it as a catalyst to savor the present moment as if I were hoarding it to warm my soul, come winter. I wish you a fine break from the intensity here. May you dream, from time to time, that it's all been a profound illusion.

Be here for you when you return.

Dave: I took 4 months off and I just recently returned. I disconnected from the internet and it did me a world of good. For your own peace of mind you are doing the right thing. You will probably get more accomplished, you will think clearer, and you may even have a different outlook on Y2K. Good luck and don't look back.

I second bardou. Its been really good for me and the family the times I've "looked away" for awhile.

Look forward to a bunch of "refreshed and ready" people commenting this fall.

Well, bardou, if the power grid goes down, I'll be permanently disconnected from the Internet, so I'm appreciating cyberspace while the juice is still flowing.

I've been a fanatic Y2K reader since the original websites had only one article a week. Now it seems I'm being sent away for my two weeks annual training just as things get exciting. Good thing we aren't using GPS!

Well Randolph, if the power grid goes down we'll ALL be permanently disconnected from everything! Maybe that's what we all need, it will give us an opportunity to get to know our families again and to appreciate the things around us that we take for granted. Like TV, cyberspace is just another diversion from the things that really matter. I believe that your family and mental health come before cyberspace. Go for it Dave!

Cool Dave. So what's your handle gonna be tomorrow night? :)

Dave, a word of caution. When I've been off the forum for a while I sort of put Y2K in the back of my mind. That's fine for a brief vacation, but the danger is that after a while it's so nice not to think about it that I start doubting whether it can possibly be a real threat. Look at all of those oblivious people out there, living their lives as though nothing bad is on the horizon. Can they all be wrong? When I get back on this forum I realize how very likely it is that we are running headlong into a brick wall. Don't stay gone too long.

Pearlie: Your right about that! But the rest is good for the soul.

Seems to be a common malady these days.

"Hi, I'm Deedah, and I'm a forum addict. I've tried to give it up, really I have, but the fear of missing out on the latest news is just too strong. So then I find myself thinking about the computer, and wondering if anything important is happening. Soon after these feeling assault me, I find myself at the keyboard, 'Just checking in to see what's up' and then, before I know it, I'm posting again. Before too long, I've started a thread, and even though I feel guilty, I like it. I think I need help, but I don't want it."

I may have to cancel my ISP, or shoot the damn thing.

;)
