"There are other, less technical features of electricity service at risk from Y2K, most of which are likely to cause problems in the summer of 2000 when electricity demand is at a peak and production margins are most vulnerable. One external factor is the reliable transportation of fossil fuels to production facilities. Most cargo ships depend on Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) navigation equipment, which is governed by date-sensitive software."

If this prediction proves correct and next summer is anything like this summer. . .

This probably isn't much of a concern. Assuming GPS systems all fail completely, and aren't remediated or replaced on these ships, and these ships have no useful alternative systems at all, this still gives them six months of wandering around at random. Surely some of them will blunder into a suitable port sooner or later [grin].

More seriously, citing this concern is grasping at straws.

we are running on low power right now because 2 generators went in a storm 3 weeks ago we are running on one if it goes we are out of eletric. i don't know where the storm was [grin]probley testing for y2k i'm guessing if they weren't what will we do for a generater next year if it is taking 3 weeks now?

Flint, ther real reason this is a straw concern, kis that if I remember correctly, the main problem with GPS will right itself after a reasonable time, a the week 2 or 3 data starts to be referrenced in real time modes.

the main problem is the roll through and back to week 0000.

But then again I am NOT a GPS guru, just a wannabe.
