Barb:

You may want to compare the Dow to last year's trends during this same period. I got out of the market last year in July and watched the trend for a while. Here's what I noticed:

DOW Jones:

July 17...close at 9337

July 24 8937

July 31 8883

Aug 7 8598

Aug 14 8425

Aug 21 8611

Aug 28 8051

Sept 4 7640

Sept 11 7795

Sept 18 7895

Oct 2 7784

Oct 9 7899

Oct 16 8416

Oct 23 8452 Oct 29 8592

Nov 6 8975

Nov 13 8919

Nov 20 9159

Nov 27 9333

Dec 4 9016

Dec 11 8821

No doubt the formatting will be screwed up, but you should be able to glean the information.

Thanks, Anita, I see how it varies. Just started watching the indices this week.

Down 136.14 today.

Down is 500+ points in a day. With a number of bad days to follow. Anything less is normal market behavior these days.

The stockbrokers and the pundits on CNBC will nodoubtedly chant "Prices are down...now's a great time to snap up some deals."

P/E ratios tell me otherwise.
