African-Americans and Women Preppers Outnumber White Male Preppers by 2-1

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

"The poll of 1,008 adults, conducted for the AP by ICR of Media, Pa., found that women (38 percent) were much more likely than men (23 percent) to stock up on supplies. In addition, 42 percent of blacks planned to take precautions, compared with 29 percent of all others."

Why is this? The average white male, such as myself, is probably too arrogant to acknowledge the fragility of the economy that he has designed, maintained and governed for the last several hundred years.

The AWG has a certain disdain for interdependence. Minorities, on the other hand, better understand the power and need for interdependence.

These poll results should provide further shame to the tabloidists at Time Magazine and elsewhere who continue to focus on grease-painted militaristic supremacists as the typical prepper. It sounds to me like the average prepper is a church-going, neighbor visiting, covered-dish participating African-American woman. Ssssssh! Can't let that one out!

good post!!!!! i have found this to be true too. i love it. maybe the "sisters" and the "sisters" have the humility to listen to God or the news or whatever and truly consider whether it is true or not. And, God bless you AWG's (i love you but you ARE weak in this area.) So if only someone could come up with art work to illustrate your description of the average Y2K "survivalist."!!!!!!

This was discussed earlier on another thread. I said that I suspected blacks to be more suspicious of their government generally than whites, since they've got the fuzzy end of the lollypop so many times in the past.

OTOH -- Saying you plan to prep & actually prepping are two very different things.

I don't know what black folks are doing, but let's hope that they're all preparing like crazy. In fact I have this absurd hope that all of my neighbors are like me, secretly prepping & not telling anyone about it. Wouldn't that be sweet?

Just An, Unfortunately the other thread you're talking about gave the opposite impression. It implied that minorities were not prepping as much. The title of the other thread rightly pointed out that the black "leaders" like Jesse Jackson have not been advocating prepping. My bet is that the average African-American recognizes that Jesse is, in 1999, a self-aggrandizing politician (like most of the other politicians)and little more.

Good catch, Puddintame. I can't speak for African-Americans, but maybe I can shed some light on the higher number of white females preparing.

Despite lo these many years of equality for women, there are still far more white female shoppers at the supermarkets than white males. (That may not be true for some West Coast cities or certain pocket areas, e.g., near a college or military base; perhaps subsequent posts will shed light). And, again generally speaking, the burden of preparing and serving food falls on the white female.

I wonder if a significant number of those white males polled actually wanted to answer, "Well, I'm not preparing; my wife is taking care of that"? It would be nice to know how the questions were phrased.

From my experience in talking to people, this is true. Women tend to believe that TS will HTF more than men believe, although men will grudgingly go along with some preps. Also, African Americans are much more attuned to this. If you say something to a black person, SHE will say, "Yes, my friend is (Something or other)." She will not dismiss you or look puzzled. God bless all...

Wonder how statistically correct was the compilation of date, seems to be more "politically correct"

This counters the implied assertion by the "Y2K for Women" site, (which I've always doubted).

Dick, I disagree. The press thinks prepping = bad, therefore, it's politically incorrect to "expose" a minority for doing something "bad."

Now I think prepping = good. I wish 100% of everybody would prep. Unfortunately, the press will continue to focus on the anti-social aspects of prepping. You know, "hoaxed, hoarding and hunkered-down" etc. etc.

Now if I could just get the women I know to prepare, they would fit the poll...

Well, I see I'm still on the "fringe" here. [G]

I'm a middle aged white male, and I at least started the preps. Although, I'm noticing my wife more and more is the one to say, "get it NOW, we're here, you want it anyway, why wait?".

Why wait indeed? Wood stoves for sale in July? Will wonders never cease.

Ha.......My wife's still ROTFLHAO at my sillyness " her words "not mine.

Ditto my wife. She thinks it's all an absurd plot.

Whereas my better half is not only a GI, but has always been one heck of a "price analyst". The woman cannot BEAR to pay anything even close to retail, and she can recall all necessary pricing info for all local outlets almost instantly. We snagged some more canned goods and sundries today at 30-50% off. Joy!

-- Mac (sneak@lurk.hid), July 30, 1999.

I do most of the buying and gardening preparations...but my wife (a GI) is pitching in with canning and some buying. Some preparations may not be admitted, though.

I think the reason more women are preparing then men is that by nature, women are more concerened about security and protection of their children. If I didn't have my three little ones to worry about, I would be doing much less. No matter how full my cubords are, I never feel there is enough. I am more concerened about feeding my girls a well balanced diet because they are growing and I am afraid their bones won't be strong or their growth will be stunted. IMHO, most men won't worry about such things.

I'm here buying some items by the 1000 pounds. Gardening, canning, shopping, food , clothes, ect. ect. I've got water 3 different ways. Three non conventional ways to cook, homeschool supplies, Got my mother, father, mother in law, father in law all preparing. Next the outhouse gets dug. Bug out location secured and stocked too. Bug out bags ready. Still goin strong on my way to RGI.

Black women have to prep because their black men don't 'do' mac & cheese or the sandwhich thing for a dinner they want and expect to have a full course meal at least 6 days a week. To prep like that you have to do a lot of meal planning...the beans are ok but they had better have some meat in that pot too !!! Take that from someone who lives it everyday.
