Uhhh, just a thought

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I noticed on a couple of threads that people were saying, we've put citys where we usta farm, how can we feed our selves?

A small town near me had an airplane fly over and take pics of the area. They plan to dig up some streets to get at the good soil under them, plant strip gardens.

I know this isn't a solution for all areas, but it is One solution. Think out of the box.

Another thought.

If you live where the water out of the ground ( river, stream, irragation ditch ) is contaminated, build an solar still ( also good for drinkable antiseptics ; )

Hi, CT.

I miss zog's witty newsletters.

A computer programmer mentioned he wouldn't be able to feed his family if he had to grow his own crops. He, his wife and young daughter moved from a town to a subdivision near the city in which he works. His plot has four large ash trees and some Colorado Blue Spruce trees. There really isn't much room for a garden out back, but his property is adjacent to a corn field.

I wonder if shortages of fuels and seeds would cause many farmers to let their fields lie fallow, thus allowing those living nearby to utilize the cropland for growing vegetables and other foods. But he doesn't have any vegetable seeds, either.

His comment made me realize how very, very few people can grow all the food they need to survive. Can't be accomplished in an apartment...

Hey Dino,

Long time no see, are your people at work still giveing you the stange eye?

I haven't trolled over at Zogs site since he " went on vacation ", he always helped me refine my my thinking on world events, and I to miss his news letters. Hopeing to get back with him thru Jethro.

It scares me what will happen to the city people, by an old plan I live in a very sparcly poped area, but a smart GI can plant after the worst of Y2k in a city, that is assumeing things go bad. There will be lots of parks, green belts, and lawns that will support a family or two. Water will be the rub, As I posted above, you can get around that problem, in most areas. Staying alive, and keeping your local community going till you can grow your own, will be the trick.

Glad your not too mad at me for the religious thing on Zogs gen board.

Keep well, and think out of the box,

CT, I'm not mad at you.

My coworkers are denial boobyheads. They're still not preparing, and their mockeries are tiresome and stupid. I've warned them that they're on their own...

I hope that many parks in cities can be reasonably managed to grow food, but there will be many unreasonable, unmanageable urban dwellers with guns.

Yes, but that will sort it's self out in the first 6 mo. After that, if it goes bad, you will have to feed yourself. You can make cheep greenhouses out of 3/4 PVC and clear plastic 10 mil.. You don't have to have glass to make a solar still, the plastic will work for a year, then scavage for the glass. You don't have to fix the world today, just think ahead, and out of the box.
