Russia Orders Ministries' Report On Y2K Readiness

Updated 1:38 PM ET July 27, 1999MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's government has issued an order to its officials and ministries, telling them to report within a month on their readiness to deal with the millennium bug problem, Russian news agencies said Tuesday.

The agencies quoted a July 24 order, signed by Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin, telling ministries to do an analysis of their computer systems and plans to deal with the Y2K problem.

Some fear the bug might cause chaos and crashes as older computers mistake the year 2000 for 1900.

The government order also told ministries to make sure any computers or technology bought in the future were able to deal with the millennium bug problem.

Concerns have focused on the readiness of Russia's missile defense system to cope with the computer problem, and Western experts have criticized Moscow for a lack of preparation to deal with the Y2K issue.

However, Russia has countered by saying it has a commission working under Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov, which sits every month to examine the problem.
