My own forum

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I've decided to try my hand at my own Y2K forum. Hey, no guts, no glory.

I have nothing against this forum. I think it's by far away the best one of its kind. Too bad there's all the troll poop to wade through, but that's life. I intend to continue my participation in this one, and I also think that setting up the separate prep forum was an excellent move.

My forum is going to be a specialized one for programmers entitled "Deathmarch Y2K". (I was going to call it "Y2K Deathmarch" but looking at that section of the forum list, there are about 10 Y2K forums that have recently sprouted like mushrooms, and I didn't want mine to get lost in that forest.)

"Y2K Deathmarch" will invite contributions from programmers who are engaged in hopeless causes. There are cases of this going on now, I say this from personal experience. (And I'm not talking about any place I've ever worked.) The programmers involved despair of making it.

One might ask "how do you know you won't be hoaxed, and then have a Stephen Poole type crow triumphantly? Do you have ESP?"

No, I don't have ESP. I've taken self-administered ESP tests and concluded that I have the ESP of a baked potato.

What I hope will protect mr from hoaxes is what I ask of the posters. I don't want just a statement that "I'm in a deathmarch, horrible, horrible." What I want, to the extent the posters dare, is a description of the organizational dysfunction which has brought them to such a sorry state. That is the whole point of my forum.

A remark to Mr. Decker: You feel that some of us should take a course in beginning economics. With all due respect, I see your Econ 101 course and believe I can trump it with a course in organizational behavior.

Anyway, as I said, I'll continue to participate in this forum, which I am pretty convinced is a very worthwhile effort under an organized attack. My suspicion of an organized attack stems from the division of labor that seems to exist in the troll activity.

My proofreading of the above pearl was not up to par. My new forum will be called "Deathmarch Y2K"

Peter, anything that will accelerate awareness at this late date will be important.

When will you have a URL available?

I would like to lurk there myself. I can't share any first hand stories because I'm not a geek, but I hear enough second hand to raise food preps to 24 months.

To al-d:

I know programmers (35 years in the business) and I know you, and you're no programmer. Sorry.

Peter,

Great idea, and it will good for both the disheartened and disillusioned programmers as well as serious lurkers. Make sure you don't let a bunch of Polly posters drag the stories into la-la land. Come back with a URL as soon as you can.
