Has this forum declined since the regulars quit

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Being an infrequent visitor nowadays, I get the impression that apart from a few old regulars (who know who they are) the quality of Yourdon posters and postings has declined somewhat. Has the Brotherhood of Yourdon finally met its demise.

I invite all oldtimers to return for a reunion.

WE never used to flame each other, we could have reasonable discussions...well most of the time anyway....

It has declined, but there's still some substance if you're willing to sift. Sifting was always necessary anyway, as I recall.

People who take y2k seriously are a bit busy these days, maybe not in preparation, but in enjoying these last days of relative normalcy.

Dick, it's understandable that as we draw closer to New Years this place will begin to get a little crazy. Keep this in mind though; Seal said, "...but we're never going to survive, unless, we get a little crazy".

Just roll with the punches the best you can and keep your chin up. This may get ugly. After 1/1/00 we can go back to being decent, civilized folk (maybe).

Richard, you wouldn't believe it. Some guy calling himself Mild Mannered Reporter posted a dozen or so articles calling for a mild to moderate Y2K outcome the other day. No commentary whatsoever, no personal remarks - just article content, mostly from newspapers. Got flamed, and even a separate thread started where some were calling for him to be deleted. What's up with that? They don't want news? It isn't like anyone here is paying for the bandwidth. It just isn't the same place it was last year.

The poetry quality is down too, and song lyrics have completely disappeared from the scene. But on the other hand, the Limeys who post here now aren't as rude to their Uncle as some others, who shall remain nameless, used to be.

Dick

This is certainly not the place we remember from last year is it? Then there were many trying to prepare and understand the issues. That remains true but now there are many who try to distort the truth and confuse new posters.

We were fairly united in our take on the subject and were able to help one another with solutions. Today there are numerous posters who are having fun trying to destroy the forum.

The severity of y2k can include death to some and I find it a shame that this is taken so lightly by some of the posters who are a few bricks short of a full load.

More and more people will be coming here to find information and as it stands they will find nothing but arguing and bickering. The moderators are attempting to find a happy medium but I fear this is not viable.

We have six months left and the news is not getting any better. Do we owe our responsibility to those who wish to disrupt the forum or to those who need the forum?

Perhaps many of the regulars know the answer. Perhaps they feel that this forum no longer represents the reason for it's formation and have elected to leave.

There are hard decisions to be made. If this is about preparation then these must be made and made quickly.

Sometimes I wonder if many are still checking in but so disgusted they feel no desire to post anymore. Especially due to the flame wars.

When I found this forum a year ago I enjoyed it because it was NOT csy2k. People could post here and not only claim ignorance to the issues but actually receive help in understanding the issues. That is why I stayed here.

I'm still holding out hope that eventually, when the writing is on the wall, the forum will go back to the way it was. There are glimmers of hope every now and then but someone with an agenda comes in and diverts attention.

Don't feed the trolls. Use common sense. Make them go away hungry. Their food of choice is getting a response...any response.

Dick Not that I have been over here very long but I miss reading the technical commentary by some posters that are involved in the remediation of Y2K. Now I am a computer newbie but early last year I used to read all the tech (coding) material that was on CSY2K even if it was over my head. The programmers are more like craftsmen than engineers. There is a sense of artistic ability in what they do that appeals to me. So for those older programming posters out there there has been at least one person that has enjoyed reading about your history and challanges.

A few links although there must be alot more in the archives.

If you're a veteran programmer, how are you preparing?

For all the newcomers, who here is a programmer?

Who are the veteran computer folks on this board?

Unc D I object, I just used a song lyric to describe one angle of this situation. Maybe I should have selected something further back in my collection than Seal. How about Grateful Dead? "...don't murder me... I beg of you, don't murder me...pleeee-eease don't murder me". (Dire Wolf)

LOL! That is great Richard. Thanks for the link Unc D, I missed that in the archives. Well now, I feel so, unoriginal. Oh well. That is really cool Richard, Y2K set to the tune of Sinatra! More ! Encore Encore!

The forum has had troll problems ever since 'William Casey Jr' aka 'Jimmy Bagga Doughnuts' aka ? started calling here in November.

Hi Richard.

Yes, the forum has deteriorated since last year. I'm not sure that all the regulars hae left or just lurking. I know that since GNBFI drew down it's sights on this forum and cpr encouraged his minions to interfere, it has been not the same. Most of the 'disappearances' are easlily explained. It's summer, the kids are out, vacations, planting, harvesting, etc. If the trolls and bs bother you, just hang out till school starts and/or something sets off JQP. The latter should make for very interesting reading on this forum.

Most all GIs have 95% of their preps done and are going on with their lives. The DGIs won't start until someone plugs a news story laced with 440 volts into their lazy brains. I know that I don't visit here near as much as I used to since horse show season started. Nearly every weekend something is going on and frequently during the week as well. This means I may have 10 or 15 minutes to check the forum but no time to post (unless I really get triggered by something). Don't worry...Be happy!
