Supermarket Surprise - Sign of Changing Times??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Just stopped in at my local Publix supermarket (Florida) to pick up dinner. In the middle of the deli aisle, I saw a large hand-written sign which said:

PREPARE FOR Y2K! PLUMROSE NON-REFRIGERATED CANNED HAMS

I have not seen anything like this before. It really shocked me. No one will even talk about it and here it was hitting me in the face. Could some attitudes be changing or just someone's idea of cute marketing? BTW, they weren't even on sale!

Cute marketing, nothing more. And not even very cute.

dakota:

I've been visiting my local CVS Pharmacy every week to see when they will carry PlumRose hams. For almost two months none has been stocked. PlumRose hams are ideal for Y2K. They don't require a can opener and taste good without heating. They can be diced and mixed into beans and other foods. One of the CVS clerks knows I am stocking up since I was purchasing multiples. I hope CVS will continue to stock them in the future, since their constant tuna specials are nothing special due to the tuna market glut.

Our Super Walmart had them plastered oll over the store last month. Last week went in and not a sign in sight. Asked one of the sales girls in sporting goods and she looked up and said "I guess they must have taked them down last night". Found that quite interesting.

What I found funny was - this is June in Florida. It didn't say "Prepare for Hurrican Season", but Y2K.

FYI, they were selling one-pound cans for 2.99. I got mine at Sam's, 3-pack for about $5.00.

I got my canned hams at $1.99 each. I don't even like ham.

Can't even find them here in Hawaii. Wish I could...we are stuck with SPAM and canned corned beef as the best option...

I've been seeing things from generators to dry/canned food advertised in this manner.(Farm and Family, WallMart, numerous newspaper ads) To me it's like being subject to ridicule.

"We know you are mostly a bunch of easily led people, so spend your money on this product, for this reason."

Oh well, thats the way it is. Just wish they would ship some canned bacon to my area. (SouthCentral Pa.)

In Albuquerque, n.m. Smiths has a "Y2K Family Prepardness Center that takes up half an aile. They have 55 gal water drums, 5 gal buckets of wheat, beans, rice and other grains, dehydrated soup mixes, dried milk, corn bread mix, candles, batteries, little solar radios and other odda and ends all related to y2k. Plus, check this, a little TV with a VCR playing a video presenting the y2k story by highly credible people in the various sectors, finance, power, water, telecommunications, etc. They have little brochures listing what to consider depending on your family size. Here is a company in the food supply industry who know what is coming down and is taking a socially responsible positon by providing their customers, the food buying public with the supplies they will need to ride this thing out.
