i was more or less'asking if anyone heard any news about closing-borders if y2k gets nasty??

I see. I have no idea what the plan is. Personal view is cover Mexican border and don't worry about Canada. The Canadians will probably be more worried about us than we them. Especially in the east.

al-d, I can't speak for the forum moderators but if I had to make a wild guess I would have to say that it was deleted because of the term you used to describe the Mexicans crossing the border.

al-d -

I asked that the thread you offered be deleted because of a racial slur.

Thank you to the sysops for acting quickly : )

I felt that the gist of your original post regarding the security of borders was valid. However, the tone in which you asked would only provoke heated discussion along the lines of racial division. Of course, you could have just been trolling for an idea of just how the forum would react, etc. Either way, I'm grateful it's gone.

As a native to Southern California I can identify with the concern you feel regarding the borders. No doubt about it, our free society offers a whole lot of points of entry for anyone interested in causing havoc. That means anybody, from anywhere.

If serious problems begin I would think that borders would close quickly and security would become very tight. But it's tough enough right now just stopping illegal entry when it occurs and the military might be pulled in a whole lot of directions.

I think it's more likely that if serious problems happen here it will cause people to flee this country into Canada and even into Mexico, not the other way around.

You should consider this, since you brought up Mexico in your earlier post. They suffered a 6.7 earthquake a few days ago. It didn't cause thousands of refugees to flee into the U.S. Much of Mexico is very poor and they just don't rely on the kinds of comfort that we do. In other words, as a society, they are used to having less and getting by.

And Canada is more open in dealing with Y2k problems, they've already stated their military will be deployed and ready.

Of course, I think that you should consider that we city people might take flight away from large cities and go into little country towns and villages and national parks looking for safety, food, shelter.

By the way, I love LA. I was born and raised in this city. The evil is not found in it's diversity but in the closed minds of a minority of clueless people and that minority comes in all shades and colors.

The diversity of this city and this country is way too underappreciated.
