Ocala, Florida y2k report.....okkkkk!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

This is in response to your recent inquiry concerning whether the City of Ocala is AYear 2000 compliant.@

As you are probably aware, the Year 2000 problem primarily arises from the fact that many existing computer systems and software products, including several used by the City (including its Electric Utility), use only two digits to identify a year in the date field and therefore are unable to distinguish between twentieth and twenty-first century dates and may be unable to accurately calculate leap years or otherwise properly interpret date codes. As a result, the City=s date critical functions related to year 2000 and beyond may be materially adversely affected unless these systems and products are or become year 2000 compliant (AY2K=).

The City has begun a prudent upgrade of its information systems, software products, and other systems to significantly improve operating efficiencies and to test, identify, correct, or reprogram its systems for year 2000 compliance. The City has contacted, or is in the process of contacting, its vendors and service providers in order to ascertain the extent of their year 2000 compliance.

There can be no assurance, however, that the City=s systems, or its vendors= or providers= systems, will be year 2000 compliant in a timely manner. Furthermore, even if the City's systems are year 2000 compliant, there can be no assurance that the City will not be materially adversely affected by the disruption or inaccuracy of data provided to the City by non-year 2000 compliant third parties and the failure of the City=s vendors and service providers to become year 2000 compliant. This problem may be especially important concerning the City=s Electric Utility, in that the City purchases its electricity from third parties, and hence is dependent upon the operation of their systems in order to provide electric service. Thus, while the City is undertaking reasonable and prudent measures necessary to avoid disruption of its services (including its electric service) to its citizens and customers, there can be no assurance that the year 2000 problem will not have a material adverse effect on the City in the future.

Hmmm...I didn't know Flint worked for the city of Ocala :)

Taz-That has to be one of the bluntest "compliancy disclosure" letters I've seen to date. At least they aren't beating around the bush; you know right where you stand with Ocala. Usually these letters are so couched in legalese that you are not sure whether anything was said or not. Linda

So - they're working on it.

They certainly don't sound as optimistic as Clinton's administration is. Maybe DC is further along in compliance, and Clinton knows that his loyal government workers will be able to do their jobs in peace and quiet on Jan 3, 4, 5, 6...with no pesky interuptions from the phone, the police, the lights, the water company, the natural gas company, ....

Well, Robert, you think you'll notice a difference in their output?
