A comment from Tim Nelson

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I printed out your comments on my Best Tip thread and let my wife read them. She said you were really making fun of me. I did not go to college and I do not live down in the States, but that was a very good Y2K idea. No one in my town even knows about Y2K. I never talk about it because I do not want to be made fun of. No more forum posting either.

Well Tim, you got to admit, Big Macs aren't exactly chock full of vitamins and minerals. In fact I heard someone refer to them as "death burgers". Oh well, to each his own.

Tim... It's just that a lot of folks don't consider "fast food" to be food at all. They consider it a joke, publicly at least. They'd never admit to eating a Big Mac, much less taking pains to preserve one for later consumption.

Don't let that bother you. Your idea wasn't bad. You just need a thicker hide if you're going to post things on this board.

(People w/o a lot of money often get very clever about preserving foods, but they run the risk of being laughed at by those who have money to burn. Example: I heard one woman describe a way to make "hamburger rocks" by repeatedly fying them, carefully removing the grease, then baking them until they become little bricks. She claims they last forever, re-constitute easily, & are very tasty. Excellent idea if you're on a budget. You might want to try it...?)

He is preparing and that is what matters.

Tim, It did not seem to me that people were making fun of you. Your idea might be good for people who like McD burgers. Personally I don't. Your thread did generate a lot of discussion and responses so don't feel bad about it. I doubt if you think everybody should always agree with you when you speak face to face. This is a pretty diverse bunch here. Stay awhile, you might like it and learn something. You may teach others something too.

Tim --- You need the support of people who are preparing for Y2K and we need your support too. Don't be sensitive about it. Some of us were just having a little bit of fun because it was such an unusual idea.

Tim... I'll be stashing chocolate because it's my favorite "treat." Personal preferences are a good thing... know what's important to ya, I say.

Tim ----- If I liked hamburgers, could buy them inexpensivly, had a large freezer, and lived somewhere it was that cold in Jan, I'd do the same thing. Good idea!

Tim, the world is full of unkind people. Take from your experience here and learn from it.

Tim, don't let other people on these boards scare you away. It was a good idea. Read and lurk awhile and you'll know who to take seriously and who to ignore.

Tim going to college has nothing to do with your way of thinking. I am glad that you are taking some sort of preparations for this unknow cause (y2k). People making fun of you is just a cheap way of pumping up their own ego. As long as you are not asking for someones help, time, or money, don't worry about what others think of you. Who knows you might have thought of something that no one else has come up with.

Come on Tim, noone was making fun of you at all, it was an out-of-the-box idea at a time when we desparately needed a chuckle. I'll put it right up there with the outwardly bizarre suggestion one of the regulars had a couple weeks ago to stock up on electric space heaters in case the disruption is just a natural gas outage. (Makes tons of sense, but I'm sure my friends' initial reaction would be that I was crazy!) Your post got some of us away from the gloomy idea of rice and beans to thinking about what we would REALLY like to store in our freezers. And besides, I don't plan to go to the store after Thanksgiving, so a freezer full of goodies is just the ticket!

Timmy,

Dont be so sensitive bro. You have to admit that it is a pretty lame idea. Living up in the hinderlands you should know about freezer burn. In 2 months time the buns will be hard as a rock even after you thaw them out. You could save your money and put the burger between 2 rocks.

Tim:

What was wrong with my suggestion of freezing milkshakes and pies? If you're gonna go the fast-food route, you need variety.

-- Randolph (dinosaur@williams-net.com), June 15, 1999.

Tim

I liked your idea. The ordinary hamburgers are cheap and you are right about the weather. I think it's a novel idea. I won't get tons of burgers, but I intend to get a few and do as you suggested. Preparing is the main thing!
