If y2k is a low priority how did they all fix the problem? OK most of them stated the problem was fixed. Confusing isn't it?

After seeing success with its initial campaign to rid Japanese banks of the Y2K problem, the Bank of Japan moved to the second stage this week with a call for banks to develop contingency plans should problems occur this new year.

A survey by the central bank found all banks have either eliminated the Y2K problem from their systems or expect to have it licked by the end of the year, said the BOJ. But some problems remain.

Turmoil in the local banking industry, in the main brought on by previously concealed massive bad debts, is leading some regional and trust banks to merge and these institutions, in the midst of reorganization, are giving the Y2K problem low priority, said the BOJ.

Among customers, those that stand out as being particularly behind in computer system compliancy are municipal governments and small businesses.

With this in mind, the BOJ is calling on al banks to develop comprehensive contingency plans should problems occur in their systems or those of companies they work with.
