Answers

Absolutely. I worked at a contract for Presbyterian Health Plan in Albuquerque last year, and drove through there once. Changed the name to match the old T.V. show to gain some national attention, if memory serves. News (weather reports) calls it 'T or C".

I know someone who lives in your neck of the woods. If you email me directly, I'll forward that email to her, so she can answer you while maintaining her privacy...

In a bizzare twist, a neighboring town is attempting national attention by changing the name of their town to "Beevis and Butthead, New Mexico."

A very large company in Albuquerque is preparing for 1 month without electricity, and recently sent out a request for HAM radio operators to sign up for emergency response teams.

T or C: I know it, love it, live here.

T or C, at least, looks to be in fairly good shape regarding local utilities. The chief engineer of the hydroelectric plant at Elephant Butte Dam, which I've toured, says they will divert whatever power is necessary next January to T or C (currently it mostly goes to El Paso and elsewhere); if there is serious trouble, there might be some brownouts or power rationing, but no extended blackouts. The dam's hydroelectric power plant is said to be ready for 2000. Our local substations (there's one near Rodeo Arena) are small and old, and don't look to have much in the way of digitalized controls; Prairie Electric is supposedly checking them out. Regarding the water supply system, Gene Hoskinson, the T or C city utilities manager, says it is ready; should power go down, the system can be operated manually. The natural gas service is more of a question mark, since the natural gas obviously comes from outside the area; still, PNM says that there is only a slight chance of the natural gas service to the T or C area being disrupted.

Regarding state govt. computers, NM is lagging relative to many other states. I suspect that many SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) are also behind, plus many local governments.

There have been some local Y2K meetings in T or C, though I have not attended any recently and don't know if any more are scheduled. If you are interested, contact Russell Peterson; he is the Sierra County Emergency Services Manager and works at the county jail.
