Where to buy 2nd hand cameras in Singapore?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Photography Singapore : One Thread

Hi, all,

I'm thinking to buy some 2nd gears. (Money no enough lah, :-)) But I don't have any experience. Can you guys kindly tell me which 2nd hand shop to go? Are these 2nd hand shops honest? What is a reasonable price for a 2nd hand equipment?

Sorry for so many '?'s, and thx in advance!

Hi!

Second hand market in singapore is very limited. I did quite a bit of search and found nothing worth considering. I'll share some problems i faced in my search...

To start with they are very expensive, i suggest you put 20% more and buy new equipment. The sales person are real hostile. They show it on their face how cheap you are trying to save some money.

Unless you flash money they won't let you touch the equipment. The concept of testing it before you buy does not exist.

After all this you still want go for used market go check out Peninsula Plaza and Peninsula Shopping Centre. There are quite a few shop on the ground floor. All are equally bad, i suggest you take someone who know someone in the shop. What ever you want to buy, first find out its price. These people have quoted new price for five years old lens. So, be very careful, go slow, take you time.

Good luck!

Peninsula Plaza, Peninsula Shopping Centre and the Adelphi area have the most photographic stores and 2nd hand as well. Walk around to see the prices range. Bear in mind, the cheaper the price, the most likely to have a defects. Do check it out before buying. Better be safe than sorry.

Perhpas you shoudl check this site first before you embark on a trip to Peninsula Plaza & Adelphi.

Why not try this Cash Converter shop?? There are two shops in Singapore, one is located at Tampines Central Sogo Building group floor and another one is at ???(SORRY i had forgotten) They are selling 2nd SLR, used digi-cam, used lenses and used flash as well. Their staff are nice but not experienced enough for such mentioned products. You may hv a try...

-- Ray (ph_kkk@hotmail.com), January 19, 2000.

There are quite alot of second-hand shops in Pennisula and Ahdelpi, but i suggest you better get someone that knows well about cameras to go with you, because most of the time, it's value and the condition of the equipment that counts, more than the price actually. So be very careful if you ever consider purchasing second-hand cameras. I have gone through that experience before, in fact most of my equipments are second-hand. Anyway, if you need any help, just give me a ring @ 93848711....i'll be willing to give you some contacts. So good luck. :)

The other cash converter shop is in Toa Payoh, near the MRT. They have lots of stuff down there too.

For second stuffs, you can try The Camera Workshop at Peninsula Arcade, on the hotel side. Prices are good. You give reference to my name and said that you read my recommendation over the internet. I've known everybody in the shop for about 5 years now (Don, Daniel, Nick, Becky & Laila) and most of my supplies are from them - 1st & 2nd hand. If you get poor service during non-peak periods, please let me know. I want to know. There is no commission in this. We should all share the good stuffs, right? If you're after 35mm camera & stuffs, you can ask Don/Daniel/Nick and Medium Format:Don/Daniel/Nick, a real expert on Medium Formats & Hasselblad:Don.

Camera Workshop is a great place to buy stuff, new or old. I've personally bought some lenses there, and they provide excellent service. Downside is that sometimes you'd have to wait ages before you get attention due to the many people who visit the shop. (Upside to that situation is that you can spend your time browsing while waiting...). They provide a 3-month warranty on used lenses, any questions are answered in a great manner. Kudos to them!

which place offer good price for trading in camara? thx a lot

-- shanny (ruby_blue86@hotmail.com), March 28, 2002.

somehow the second hand shop doesn't offer good take-in prices (well at least they didn't for my case), so what i did was post my items up at website, word of mouth etc.

-- sanz (san2@bluemambo.com), April 03, 2002.

the camera workshop would be the best place to go. it is next to peninsular hotel. go look for a guy called daniel, say a fren recommended you. it is themost honest shop i know. i duno the address, but once u pass ruby, just walk straight down to the end and u will see the shop on your right

-- ingrid wee (kelgrid@hotmail.com), July 20, 2002.

The Camera Workshop at Peninsula Hotel is a relatively safe place to start getting used equipment. I've bought FM2, FE2 and a few manual Nikkor lenses from them, all used. So far I've had to return only one of my purchases which was a lens with sticky aperture diaphragm. They fixed it without any questions asked. I would even go so far to say that the staff would dissuade you from buying equipment if they felt it wasn't worth spending money on. Becky and Daniel are the 2 person that I interact with most often. Service is friendly but the wait is long during peak hours (i.e after 5pm on weekdays and after 12 on Saturdays). However at the end of the day you must know at least a bit of camera stuff before buying anything from any shop, honest ones or otherwise. By the way, for good service at a retail store, try John 3:16 at Funan Centre, level 3. Speak to either Samuel or Leslie. They generally give good advice.

nice board =) I was feeling kinda bored in the morning, so I logged on to the net and tried finding a second hand camera shop in SG. My dad wants to buy a 2nd-hand digital camera in GOOD shape, do you know of any shop? Not some lousy digital camera that has some cranked-up pixel resolution.

Hi Guys,

Some very useful information...thanks to all those that posted their contributions.

I have a Minolta Dynax 5 that is less than 1 year old and comes with a 75-300 lens as well.I realised that after buying it, I don't need something this good.

Anybody know where I can get a decent price for it..or is anybody interested in it?

Looking forward to some advise.

I baught a digital camera (3.3 mega pixels) at CASH CONVERTER - Tampines branch hust for 's$145'. Is very cheap and best one. I so lucky. U can try there. Bye..

-- Manie (maniekandan5@yahoo.com), October 14, 2003.

I bought a Minolta autofocus at Cash Converters last week & their service was good. However the service level in the Camera shop in Penninsula plaza was not upto the mark. I have bought both new & used equipments from both Singapore & Europe. The service level in Europe is a class apart & Singapore is no comparision.
