info pertaining to tapering/how soon to begin before big meet

My kids swim for a YMCA. We have district chapionships on March 19th and state championships the following weekend. There have been two schools of thought circulating the Y concerning the importance of tapering and when it should begin. The kids have not started tapering to this point. I'd like any thoughts you might have. thanks

Answers

It depends if you are a distance swimmer then a week and a half to 2 weeks is good, if you are a sprinter then sooner. Also it depends on you conditioning, age and other things. You usaully start commin down in about 3-4 weeks out and really drop the yardage the week of.
