searching for a story or poem about a knight's quest

old poem or story read long ago. It is of a knight who makes a grave error with a young maiden, and is sentenced to go out into the world and in order to find out what women really want or something bad happens to him. He quests for a great deal of time and finally comes up with the answer and also changes as he does this. Anybody recognize this story?
