Response to Tourney 3 - What should we do with those that vote & don't play 10 games?

from Tim Morrow (tjmorrow@bigpond.com)
The only way to be fair is to randomly select the games. I don't know why this method has fallen into disfavour. Any other method is biassed, simple as that. For every argument on fairness there is an equally valid counter argument showing its fallacies so we are 'spinning our wheels' over this every time it is dragged up. We seem to spend a whole lot of time arguing on how / what games to play and less time having fun playing them. I also can't understand the rule behind why you have to play every game in the tournament to qualify. Just give players 0 points for games they don't play - isn't this penalty enough? I can't imagine wanting to play all games in any tournament. I'd be grateful is someone would explain the reason behind this ruling. This and the arguments about game selection are the two compelling reasons preventing me from playing in the tournaments.
