68 Lemans electrical

Just bought a 68 Lemans coupe. I replaced the battery and immediately lost my fuel gauge. I don't mean the needle dropped to empty, it just vanished from the gauge window. Are the two related somehow, Has anyone heard of this happening, and is there a simple fix without removing the whole dash? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I haven't even had time to test my mpg yet and have already run out of gas once.
