have i done the right thing

DLC are chasing me for the debt on a flat repposession 14 years ago altho I have made some payments towards the daebt, I have asked them to put in writting the total breakdown of the debt, they were very reluctant to do this and insisted i took the info down over the phone, Altho they were very reluctant I insisted they put every thing in writing,have i done the right thing, what should i be looking for when i receive the info.
