Stop-Motion (frame-at-a-time) animation cameras?

I need help selecting a camera to do FRAME-AT-A-TIME animation. I want a camera for my teenagers to let them play with this method, but I don't want them to use a computer (they spend enough time there already, thank you. The Best-buy guys weren't much help. I'd like to keep it under a $1000 if possible. The goal is they get to make mini-movies that they can display directly onto the TV at night. Thanks for taking the time to help. (I'm a chem. E working in biology)
