capture cards for g-4

hello. i am wanting to use my G-4,using final cut, to edit a short shot with an xl-1. will capturing the image through the built in firewire port on my G-4 degrade the image? do i need to spend the dough for a capture card? i am not too concerned with the speed at which i render effects...i am just interested in not losing image qualitiy. thank you.
