If you've started paying a debt collector, is it too late to argue?

Following the break-up of a relationship. Halifax sold my debt to a collection agency. My partner did not reply to the letters sent by the agency, As far as i know he has not been approached since. I agreed to pay half of the debt on a monthly basis without establishing the fairness of the repossession sale. Can I still question the legitimacy and fairness of the debt demanded from me?
