MAME Sound Quality From Win36 Final Onwards

Is it me or has the sound quality in MAME gotten worse. The sound in Win36b15 was ok but in all the versions beyond that I get the occasional 'cracks' in the sound when playing the games. I get this no matter what sound options I set, although I do tend to use the recommended MIDAS option for this Win95 (DOS disabled) machine.
