Recovery of mortgage indemnity claim

I have just finished paying the shortfall of the mortgage and am now being chased to pay the insurance indemnity of #12000 what are my options ? where can I get help? Is this legal in respect of the decision by the mortgage lenders council to restrict the time limit to 6 years instead of 12, this claim is over 9 years old?
