fire retardants for wildland fires

I am a Fire Protection Technology major at the university of akron. I am writing a paper on alternatives to water for extinguishing wildland fires. I am trying to concentrate on the extinguishing agents that are dropped from airplanes. If anyone has information on the chemical makeup of any extinguishing agents or the correct method of use I would appreciate a response.
