specs to consider when looking for mics

I've been looking at shotgun mics to attach to my XLR adaptor (Studio 1 Pro) and I'm confused about what makes a good mic. I understand that condencer mics are better, other than that the audio mechanics, acoustics is over my head.

Can anybody give basic advise about, say, what makes a better mic, than the onboard mic?
