Bristol & West Shortfall

from Terence Steven Smith (terry@missioncontrol2.demon.co.uk)
I purchased a property in 1987 with Bristol & West, and after some financial difficulties I handed the keys back in April 1990.At the time I took out the mortgage I was forced to pay some #500 for indemnity insurance which ,I was told , would cover the mortgage amount should I default on the payments. This ,I should add, was for the full amount of the mortgage , not the monthly payments. I have today received a letter from Bristol & West informing me that I now owe them the sum of #56,280.79 which is the shortfall from the sale of the property.I have not been in contact with them yet, as I plan to speak to a solicitor first. How do I stand legally. Can they force me to sell my current property? Surely I have some comeback , as I paid the insurance that they demanded. Help!
