tricky question about duplex digital I/O

from Gregory Michael Travis (mito@panix.com)
I have a tricky question about using the digital I/O of a Kurzweil k2500 with Cubase through a digital audio card, such as the Event Gina.

What I would like to do is to have an entirely digital signal path between the K2500 and Cubase.

Has anyone done anything like this?

1. Can you record the digital output from the KDFX unit directly into Cubase via the Gina S/PDIF port?

2. Can you pass the digital output from Cubase, via the Gina S/PDIF port, into the digital port of the K2500 sampling option?

[These two seem obvious -- perhaps too obvious to document on their website! I want to have confirmation before I spend several thousand dollars on this setup.]

3. (The tricky one) Is is possible to route audio out of the Gina S/PDIF port, into the digital input on the sampling option, through the K2500 via Live Mode, through KDFX, out the KDFX digital out, and back into the Cubase via the Gina S/PDIF port? (I can't tell if there are separate physical ports for the digital ins and outs on the Gina....)

Here's a diagram to show what I mean: +----------------------+ | Cubase VST | +----------------------+ | ^ | | V | +----------------------+ | S/PDIF S/PDIF | | out [Gina] in | +----------------------+ | ^ | | V | +----------------------+ | Sampling KDFX | | Option S/PDIF | | S/PDIF out | | in | | | | [K2500] | +----------------------+

This configuration uses the K2500 as a fully-digital effects unit.

Is this possible, or I am misunderstanding the way the S/PDIF works?
