Hmmm, I just checked Puzzle Bobble on the following versions of Mame (Dos34, Dos35b2, and Win34), and in all 3 versions, the game was set to the default setting of "4".(posted 9809 days ago)Which version of Mame are you using? Have you tried deleting the .hi & .cfg files?
